My first day as President (1st July) turned out to be an interesting day with a sudden request for a TV interview where I was able to state LIANZA's affirmation of the principle of intellectual freedom and people's right to use their own judgement about material they wish to read or not (LIANZA 2002 statement). It certainly sparked email comment from library users.

Library Tour Of Te Upoko A Te Ika A Maui
During the latter part of June, in my final days as LIANZA President, I was very fortunate to visit five libraries in Te Upoko O Te Ika A Maui Region. With Alli Smith, LIANZA’s Executive Director as my “minder”, our trip started at the Parliamentary Library. Following a tour of this wonderful building by Moira Fraser, I gave an update for staff on LIANZA’s current activities and recent achievements as well as providing a snapshot of our experiences at Christchurch City Libraries post the earthquakes. Next stop was Upper Hutt City Library to meet with Debbie Duncan and the team. We saw what they have achieved with the successful building renovation and expansion and their RFID system in full swing.
