From the Editor
Well I've done something sneaky this week. I've actually invited Mike Metcalfe, our outgoing Communications Manager to write a piece for us this week, just before he departs from the LIANZA office.
I hope you will write many comments in response to his editorial. On behalf of the LIANZA community I'd just like to say to Mike, thank you very much.
You've done a simply outstanding job!

LIANZA Activity
The future of the NZLIMJ (New Zealand Library and Information Management Journal). The last issue of New Zealand’s print research journal the NZLIMJ, is to be published later this month. I for one would like to congratulate Alison Fields for being an excellent Editor and being a source of knowledge, support and guidance in my induction into this field and role.
The Professional Registration Board has recently completed a review of revalidation for the LIANZA National Council.
A copy of the review can be read here.
Some new appointments have been made to the Professional Registration board also.
The judging panel for the Paul Reynold scholarship has been announced.

With the changes to National Library week, Mike has set up a new resource section on the website. Check out our new Promote Libraries Campaign page.
Fancy changing jobs? Always plenty of vacancies to be found here in LIANZA’s careers section.
Regional news
Waikato/Bay of Plenty [update from Stef Clark, regional councillor]
Waikato/BOP region announces its upcoming Weekend School to be held at Waitomo on the weekend of 6-8 May 2011.
The Weekend School is a well-established feature of our region, having begun in 2002 at Whakatane and this year it is to be held at Waitomo, the site of the famed Waitomo Caves.
The audience is usually around 50 people who range from library assistants to library managers from public, academic, health and special libraries. We aim to provide a wide range of professional development. LIANZA President Carolyn Robertson will speak on Saturday morning following registration.
The programme will run through Saturday, and Sunday morning, followed by time for sightseeing. On Friday evening there will be a welcoming function at the Waitomo District Library in Te Kuiti and there will be a cave tour on Saturday evening.
View the programme here!
See our community page for more info and to register.
Ikaroa [update from Heather Lammond, regional councillor]
It is with regret that we have received Jay Robinson's resignation from Ikaroa Chair and Committee (effective 4th April 2011). Jay is off to other pastures (not necessarily greener!) and we wish him all the best for the future...

Otago/Southland [update from Lorraine Johnston, regional chair]
We got the events calendar for the year off to a gentle start on 27th January with a tour of the recently renovated Robertson Library. We followed up on 24th March with a challenging address by the recently appointed (October 2010) University Librarian, Howard Amos. Howard shared his vision of the 21st Century Librarian, and some of the issues we need to grapple with in the next few years.
The programme laid out for the rest of the year is no less ambitious. On 24th May we are planning a talk by award-winning children’s illustrator David Elliott. 13th July sees us running an LA Day at Balclutha, planning for which is already well under way.
Mary Ronnie will be guest speaker at the AGM on 31st August, giving us a reprise of her ‘Pioneers, revolutionaries and the new guard’ presentation from the 2010 conference.
A Weekend School will be held in Wanaka on 12th and 13th November, and we top off the year with a Christmas function planned for 8th December. Rumour has it wine will be involved, and possibly also Rhubarb. If all this is not enough - we are working with Dunedin Public Libraries to run a Book Hospital in early May. It will be a busy year, but we hope a rewarding one!
