Daily Image 2011 : a Flickr challenge

Library clears its shelves

You may have heard about the problems faced by UK public libraries at the moment, with many threatened with closure. One story that has made it all the way to New Zealand is that of the small library at Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire. The local community came out in support of the library, which faces closure, as a result of a campaign on Facebook . The campaign was for every single book in the library to be taken out at the same time, as well as starting an online petition to save the library. The community rallied around and the shelves were soon empty. This story has prompted action from other small libraries under threat across the UK. In the next issue there will be a longer report from Kathryn Oxborrow about the ways in which libraries and their communities in the UK are standing against the threatened cuts…

Auckland Library tweetup
